problems with gembuilder 1.1.3 and rubygems 1.0.1

Wondering if anyone else has tried this combination? I found a patch
on the gembuilder project page that updated it for rubygems 0.9.5, but
while it appears to run on 1.0.1 I'm finding it creates malformed gems
full of temp files that give errors like the following on
installation:

$ sudo gem install rb-appscript-0.5.1-universal-darwin-9.gem
ERROR: Error installing rb-appscript-0.5.1-universal-darwin-9.gem:
attempt to install file into "/var/folders/p+/p+pBAQxKE-S81g-RmJ1K8U++
+TI/-Tmp-/gembuilder/TODO"

Anyone have any ideas? Any alternative suggestions for building binary
gems?
