Search path for a Web control

I just built the source for a web control that I found on the web. I also
built a separate project with a page to test the control and set that page
as the start URL in the web control project. When I execute the project the
web page cannot find the control. The control is built in a subdirectory on
the drive. In order for it to be found what should I do?
Place that directory in the system path?
Change the output directory to another? If so where?
Web share the output directory?

First time I've built someone else's web control project and I'm not sure of
the best way to proceed.
