Do

* ignore it
* filter it
* report it

Don't
-----
* repeat it
* respond to it
* link to it

Although the practice is somewhat controversial, I believe it's
occasionally helpful to guide others in avoiding it.

Yes to everything John said.

Thunderbird has a "kill thread" feature bound to a capital letter K on
the keyboard. I use it to make spam go away. Then repeated spams of
the same subject get deleted, as do replies. It makes this news group
very tidy.

I use lower-case "k" in my Thunderbird to kill threads. The news server I
usually use already seems to filter a lot of the spam, and the T-Bird message
filters handle much of the rest, so this group doesn't seem to me to have a
whole lot of spam. I suspect much of the spam is only visible via Google Groups.

I drop everything from Google Groups, and no spam here.

I of course lose some non-spam openings, but if it's worth a discussion,
I see most followups to it with quotes, and that is all is needed to get
into it.

So she went into the garden to cut a cabbage leaf to make an apple pie;
and at the same time a great she-bear, coming up the street pops its head
into the shop. "What! no soap?" So he died, and she very imprudently
married the barber; and there were present the Picninnies, and the Grand
Panjandrum himself, with the little round button at top, and they all
fell to playing the game of catch as catch can, till the gunpowder ran
out at the heels of their boots.

yes I use google groups and I agree with you
but, for example, I don't see a lot of spam in "comp.lang.java.help"
this is an historic newsgroup and is a shame
tnx for join discussion
