using utf-8 with hibrnate and velocity templates

While fetching non-standart characters from mySql using hibrnate (e.g.
€, ä, Ü) and displaying them using velocity templates, i get junk
characters instead. both (vm and mySql) are configured to use UTF-8.
what might be the problem?
