What alternative to JMS for asynchronous RPC ?

Hello,

I am using EJB3, I have a Java client and a Java server. I would like to
send some asynchronous messages from 1 to the other. Is there a
framework or anything that enable me to send my messages via some
function call like RMI ?

I saw that there is JAX-WS but I don't want to use XML because my data
will be pretty big and should stay in a binary format to avoid bandwitch
waste.
