The "autocomplete" capbilities aren't very
intelligent and often recommend something which has to be ignored or
cancelled.

Try vim auto complete (if you have vim rather than a vanilla vi)
Type the start of a variable name then either CTRL-N or CTRL-P. Well
worth learning.... And you can configure the hell out of it...
