I used to play with HPCs while working at AMD and frankly you're an old
timer. They pretty much all run GNU/Linux (or some derivative) and the
default code page is the ASCII (whatever the ANSI equiv is).
So what you're saying is that you lack experience of non-ASCII systems. This

And nowadays we call them "clusters" not mainframes.
