Drastically Speeding Up Java Web Start

I discovered this reading my own website, and boy did it make a huge
difference.

Using the Java control panel, I configured a direct connection for JWS
rather than the default browser proxy. It is at least an order of
magnitude faster.

I wonder why? You'd think that Java would cache the settings, then the
network would just run at it's normal speed.

Do you have any files I could test this on? I'd like to see if I can
reproduce your results on my system. Maybe it's just your particular
system/proxy/settings.
