Target = Blank vs Top

If you MUST open a new window pick a meaningful name for it so multiple
clicks will reuse the new target window instead of spawning dozens of
windows. A user can still hold SHIFT if the need a third, etc. window.

And then user finds it strange that nothing happens when he clicks a link
on first site again. Site is broken, so he closes it. One time out of
ten, js thingy to focus it works or is fast enaugh to get the other
window to front, and then this is only as annoying as normal new window.

Oh I agree... Opening a new window is almost never necessary and should be
avoided whenever possible. Unfortunately there are some times when it might
be necessary. When it is necessary you have to make sure the user can expect
the other window someplace.

Oh, but that's easy. Just provide good content and your wandering visitor
will come bakc to you.

Sure, after they've closed the window of the extraneous content your link
took them to, they can then start all over at Google hoping they've got
their search string the same to find again the excellent content that your
site contains...
