Usually these are stored in the aspnet_client folder under wwwroot.

If "usually" means "under ASP.NET 1.1", then yes.

ASP.NET 2.0 no longer uses the /aspnet_client folder.
Instead, it embeds the scripts directly into the ASP.NET assemblies.
