Are there any good free gui style c++ compilers that a student could use to
learn on? I need to start some programs soon but dont have a compiler.

Dev-C++ is an IDE, not a compiler. It uses MinGW.

I know it... It ws just to be more clear towards a newbie...

You should contact your schools Microsoft Representative, usually you can
get .net for free while you are a student.
