Might I suggest that anyone who has a further interest in pursuing
the level of niceness that should be displayed on this group, take
it up on a new and separate thread?

Its nice to be nice, but censorship isnt.
Alas, it's a fine line to thread to have a group that is self policing
run well, without trying to enforce one's view on somebody else. At
least this group, as far as I have seen so far, doesn't have so many
persons "outside of pedagogical reach", and most discussions are civil
and about the facts, not the persons.
The difference between polite guidance and (attempted) censorship is
mostly in the wording, not the meaning. It's somewhere on the line
between "it's not a good idea ..." , "I recommend against ...", "you
shouldn't ...", and "you are not allowed to ...".
(Personally I have found that guidance is more easily accepted if it
doesn't contain the word "you". Fragile egos, which can have a hard
time accepting being corrected in public, will not so easily feel
personally offended.
Anyway, my oneline will be:
Go for the ball, not the man
(*especially* when you think the man is an idiot
/L 'Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level,
then beat you with experience'
