Deploying J2EE application

I have a small application I want to package up, it has a small
configuration database and a property file to point to the config databases.
Is it possible to package up a WAR file that I can ship, the user can
install and then present the user with a configuration screen to set up the
property file and the databases. This is instead of having to do scripts for
different OS and being able to have a web configuration. Where can I write
files to or persist information in the app server to store the config
database uri.

There is an open source project called JForums that does something
similar. Perhaps you could steal from them if their license allows it.
