otherwise, any free source available that can be customized?

You may also want to check out Dot Net Nuke which is an open source portal
project that is full featured and has many freely available modules that
others have developed for it that may be snapped in for even further
functionality. It is very easy to customize and there are many tutorials on
how to do so now.
