experience definition in interview

In work experience, I have been working in Java programming
for 1 year now. But I have been programming Java
for the projects at college for 2 years. The interviewers always
ask me how much experience in Java. Should I say 1 year or 3 years?
I am really confused with the definition of experience.

Well, why don't you tell them the truth: 1 year as a
professional programmer and 2 years as a student.

Now, the next question that you will be asked in an
interview will be: "are you able to work on your own
or do you need constant guidance?"

State the truth, but allow for your interpretation:
If they ask how much experience you have in Java, answer 3 years.
If they ask how much work experience you have in Java, answer 1 year.

It may be that they ask for work experience, and you still want to mention
the 3 years (which happens to be a magic number for work experience by the
way, at least in the Netherlands). In that case, you could also say you've
been programming in Java for 3 years now, starting in college.
