free host to test my jsp/servlet

H

Hi, I developed some pages with jsp and servlet. They worked fine on
my local machine but I would like to try them in a real environment.
Is there a free host on the internet I can deploy and test them? I am
looking for tomcat.

Thanks,

John

I doubt free, but cheap. See http://mindprod.com/jgloss/isp.html
for a list of Java friendly ISPs.

you can download tomcat and install
it on your machine then access it as 127.0.0.1

He has already done that. He could set himself on the net with a
permanent IP using the free dyndns service. Then he can access
himself as if he were on out on the net somewhere.

See http://mindprod.com/jgloss/dyndns.html

He could perhaps get a friend or spare machine on his LAN to host
Tomcat for him. Dyndns lets anyone become a miniature ISP.

and why wouldn't an instance of Tomcat on your development computer
(i.e., home) be considered a "real environment"?

If you lack a permanent IP, it is harder
to get the site 'crash-tested' by a
thousand real users.

That's the pointed. I have tested in the "considered real environment"
and now I want to a "real real environment".

Hi John! Since there are so many people here
who are not as good at English as you and I,
it might help them follow the topic if you
bottom-post, put your comments after the
last bit, rather than top-post.

If you could do that I would appreciate it.

Now. How did you go with the list I pointed
out? Any luck there?

Does Roedy's suggestion not work for you?
<http://mindprod.com/jgloss/dyndns.html#DYNDNS>
(Actually, that was the one I preferred, Roedy
also pointed to a list of inexpensive ISP that
support servlets)

That will give you very close to the
'real real environment', you can at least
test the web-app at some load.

No lock with it. Looks like it is a very old list. I happened to find
linkflix.com with free host. But when I registered, it said "in
maintainess...". I tried since last night, no luck yet...

This one requires to use my pc, something I do not like...

Too bad. Let us know if it comes good.

I considered using it for my _own_ testing purposes,
but it has some problems for me too.

1) My upload limit (from my local ISP) is 100Meg
and I am already pushing close to that often, just
keeping my officical sites updated and current.

2) My PC sounds like a hovercraft, and it would
drive me mad to run it 24/7. [ It's OK when
I am computing, 'cos I simply max out the Creative
Soundlaster and make the music 5X the volume of the PC -
...and annoy the neighbours instead ;-) ]

not really. Dyndns gives you the net effect of permanent IP and a
domain for free!

See http://mindprod.com/jgloss/dyndns.html

I had that specifically in mind when
I changed 'hard' to merely 'harder'..

I would use it myself but for the fact
of my puny upload limit, it sounds like
a great service.

(Well.. that and the amount of elecricity
required to run my 'hovercraft' 24/7)

Myjavaserver.com works now. But it has some tricks about how to name
and deploy your servlet. Let me know if you want to know.

That is excellent to hear. :)

Please. If you could send it to me in email
I'll whip up a few notes for a web-page.

My email is physci at the 'main' domain..

Is your site actually up yet? What's the URL?
