Hello. Basically i'm a young bloke who wants to make a game for fun bc low level autism (jk). However i have zero idea what language i should use. The game would be 2d with pixel graphics (think old FF games). Do i need to make an engine? What programming language should i use? Will i have a will to live at the end? I'm planning on taking my sweet-ass-time so no rush there, also i'll post the crap i make on GitHub so you can all laugh at me. So basically, do i need to make a game engine (i kinda want to bc it sounds fun), what language do i use, will i want to live after i commit to this horrendous idea? Any and all answers are appreciated (even the joke ones)

First off, it's awesome that you want to dive into game development! It can be a fun and rewarding experience, and trust me, many of us have been in your shoes, wondering where to start. So, let’s break it down!
Creating your own game engine can be a fun project, but it’s not necessary for your first game. Many developers start with existing engines like Unity, Godot, or GameMaker Studio. These engines provide a lot of built-in functionality, allowing you to focus on game design rather than the underlying technology. However, if you’re curious and want to learn, building a simple engine can be a great learning experience!

Will You Want to Live After This?

Haha, that’s a valid concern! Game development can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. You might hit some bumps along the way, but remember, every game developer has faced challenges. The key is to take your time, enjoy the process, and celebrate small victories. Plus, sharing your progress on GitHub is a fantastic way to connect with others and get feedback!

In conclusion, pick a language that excites you, consider using an existing game engine to ease your journey, and remember to have fun! You’ve got this, and who knows, you might just create something amazing that others will love. Happy game developing!

Yeah man i'm probably gonna go with Godot (because i dont want to waste 70 gigs on unity on a 500 gig drive). I asked this question on reddit too and got similar answers. I'm probably gonna spend a good while writing the story (maybe to even dialog level) and trying to get all of the artistic stuff done. Also ironically enough i actually do have asd lol. (I have aspergers so i hope i can get my characters to not all be repetitive)
