need preserve GridViewSortEventArgs.SortDirection manually?

I have a gridview enabled sorting, and gridView_Sorting, the parameter
GridViewSortEventArgs.SortDirection
is always Ascending no matter enable viewstate or not. (ocz, I'd like to
disable viewstate)

Do I need preserve GridViewSortEventArgs.SortDirection manually(that is
easy)?

I assign datasource to GridView manually in code behind.
