Open Child and Close Parent

How do you open a new window and closed the parent window. ie click on link
and new window opens in place of original window.

Is there some way of combing window.open and window.close ?

Closing mother window would allways launch an alert
asking if you really want to close it
( FireFox do not close mother window, without alert)
