[OT] availability of most recent postings

J

Jan Faerber

Hello,

is it true that in the last few weeks or months on alt.html the time period
has been reduced in which the most recent postings are availabel by a
newsreader?

Yes. New posts now show up within 3 months. :)

How should we know? Ask your news server admin.

This depends on your particular news server (Chello, in your case).

AOL and Google both seem to be flakey at present though.

Does it not depend on the server where the news group is hosted?

In this group I can not read postings which are older than three or four
days with Knode. In another newsgroup where I subscribed I can still read
postings from december 04.
I haven't tested it with Opera or other newsreaders yet.

Or doesn't my particular news server treat different groups in a same
manner? Or any other news server...

Nonsensical question. Newsgroups aren't hosted on one particular
server.

The newsreader shouldn't make a difference unless you've configured
one of them ro only download the most recent X messages, in that case
you'd get older mesages from groups with less traffic.
Or doesn't my particular news server treat different groups in a same
manner? Or any other news server...

Most news servers keep messages longer on low traffic groups.

Really?!! But I can install a news server on my computer ... well, I can not
because I don't know how to do it by now how to start this process. So the
newsgroups are either registered on a pc or hosted by the provider who owns
the news server?

So then the news server can set the interval or the range what is low
traffic, middle traffic and so on?

Steve

And groups.google.com has its own huge hard disk?

Nope. They're hosted by thousands of news servers and "registered" to
none.

Is it not like a DNS name of a webpage? I mean you can not have the same IP
adress on two different machines. You can have some parts of a HP e.g. one
/ some directories on a different machine which is sometimes a problem with
frames.

Or do you have to register a news server and then you can decide which
newsgroups you host?

Troll style post.
You say you can't read new posts for 4 days, yet here you are replying to a
new post on the same day.

If Knode is your newsreader, then you need to learn how to adjust the
filters so it will show more current posts.

No. Just because it has dots in it, doesn't mean it has anything to do
with DNS.

No. There is no "registration".

Most ISPs have their own news servers on which they decide how
long to retain the postings. alt groups may be retained for
shorter times if set that way by the admins. Your news reader
settings determine what is downloaded from the news server to
your news reader. I've never heard of the news reader you are
using, so I don't know how its settings work.

Nope. Just another example of our inability to comprehend.

He said that he can't read postings OLDER than four days, not that
can't read postings NEWER than four days.

That's rich, coming from you, Stupid.

You say you can't read new posts for 4 days,

Oh, Bullis, Bullis, Bullis. That's not what he said at all. He said
that posts *older* than three or four days are missing. Read it again:
"In this group I can not read postings which are older
than three or four days ..."

Pretty unambiguous to even the most intellectually challenged. Well,
perhaps not the most ...

OK ... thank you very much for replying to all of you.
I don't want to start a discussion on this topic.
