Question about image behind <Td>

hi, i am running some experiments and want to stretch an image behind a
table <td> cell. I don't care if it distorts, but thought maybe
Javascript was up my alley to start. Can someone pls help me with this
idea?

Use CSS position:absolute;, width, height, z-index

but thought maybe
Javascript was up my alley to start.

No, it is not primarily an script issue,
so being off topic, please follow up on a CSS NG.
