safari and chrome: add continuously new line on ajax refresh

I have a very strange problem: my site is working well with explorer
and firefox, but on safari and chrome the ajax refresh (which happens
once a second) adds a new empty line where the refresh occurs. Any
advice is appreciated where the problem might come from. You can see

Seems like a WebKit bug. I can't see anything in the code that should
behave like that.

Well, that sucks. Any idea what I can do about this? Because Mozilla
and Firefox is 5% of the traffic so I can't let it stand that way...
