smoother transition of "display" property

Hi

Is there any way that I can set the "display:block" property so that the
item displayed wont pop-up instantly but will rather have a smooth (slower)
transition from non-visible to visible.

Not in HTML. Perhaps there's a scripting way, but I've never heard of it.
