Validate Datagrid in edit or add (in footer)

Hi,

I have a datagrid that I can edit and insert new rows (with the footer). I
have only one textbox in the edit template and in the footer template. I
also have a required field validator and a custom validator to prevent
duplicate values.
The problem is that when I call the page.validate after editing a row, the
requiredfield in the footer also fires and comes back with an error.
how can I separate it so only the edit / insert controls fires at a given
time?
