gem hanging in Windows

I'm trying to setup an environment on a Windows XP machine. Note: I do
(almost) all my work in Linux.

I'm trying to run a "gem install" on the Windows box. Immediately after
the command, I get the message:

"Bulk updating Gem source index for http://gems.rubyforge.org"

At that point, it appears to hang. On the chance that it was just
running very slowly, I've allowed this to sit there for 4 hours (so
far), but it's not continuing.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

Perhaps windows firewall or another fw is blocking the server? (McFagee
errrr I mean McAfee)... Norton (lol.)

Try running gem update --system and see if that doesn't go through.

This hung as well. Thanks for the idea, though.

Upgrade RubyGems manually (search 'manually'):
