Turn off ASP.NET 1.1 validators via client-side javascript

I've seen the posts about in ASP.NET 2.0 being able to use the
javascript function ValidatorEnable(Page_Validators, false); to turn
off validators, but how do you do this in 1.1?

I've tried it but it doesn't appear to be working.

I've also noticed that in FireFox the following code doesn't get output
to the source:

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"
src="/aspnet_client/system_web/1_1_4322/WebUIValidation.js"></script>

even though I've set FireFox up as "upstream" browser via BrowserCaps.

Any thoughts? Thanks for any help people can give.
