Very cool, dude. I passed this along to some of my co-workers, as we've
been trying to get pure CSS-compatible code done, where we even exclude
the use of tables as in this site.

Unfortunately, a few of my developers - when I gave them this link - asked
if it could be done in Front Page.

sigh...

I have to admit, that's a pretty incredible layout. I don't think I've
seen anything like it. That No. 201 picture's freaking me out. You
can't make an underline do that, it has to be a rollover effect but I
can't a link to a js file, no script tags, no nothing. SO HOW IN THE
HELL IS HE DOING IT? The underlining for the headers too. That big one
where only the ends are highlighted. How the hell's dude doing that
too? The layout's just incredible. I'd like to pull some nifty ass
tricks like that.

I see but I cannot believe. Like I said, I don't think I've seen
anything like it. Goddamn.

Typical simple CSS mouseover, no need for script in that.

In CSS files check out #ish a:hover... background image is
http://www.alistapart.com/pix/ishbug.gif and place of it is just changed on
that effect. Plenty of those in web. No point use script for something this
simple that can be done more nicely with plain CSS.

Annoying part of layout is that it's designed 1024x768 minimum resolution. I
basically never have that big browser window even of my screen is bigger
than that. They could easily have made main column fluid and that layout
would have worked on 800x600 resolution too.

This is just standard CSS layout. I saw an article on it awhile back (and
even may have posted it here) but haven't done squat about it. One of our
new web pages for the county is in QA right now with a flash header and an
entirely CSS layout. I thought it looked pretty cool. (I wasn't involved
- too busy working on my projects.)

I first used this on a site I did for the group The Church, using a design
from Blue Robot (http://bluerobot.com/web/layouts/layout1.html). You can
see the (not functional) site here:
http://www.perfectreign.com/carnivore/index.html

I should make an effort to get it working, I suppose. I was having fun
getting classes working in PHP and making everything completely n-tier
structured. But, that was in 2002, before the second child showed up and
my life went berzerk. :)

There will be a few confused readers (including me) whose DNS server will
point them to the old site. Here is the new site's IP address:

Hope it contributes,

PS - I noticed many people who are amazed (in blogs, and alt.www.webmaster),
but apart from the neat CSS tricks, it doesn't appeal to me visually. This
comes to show what a huge rule taste plays.

Not to mention the fixed width.
Also, when enlarging the font in Firefox, the menu loses items. Just
out of sight, no scrollbar. People with bad eyesight can't get to the
feed, nor are allowed to contribute. Apparently.
With the very small body text, the percentage of people who need to
enlarge the text is higher than usual too. Font size only /one/ notch
up already gets the 'feed' menu item off screen on a 1024x768 window.

Yeah I don't get all the hype. It's like these people have been
closed up in a box where all they've ever seen has been text only
websites and now that they got one with a few ho hum, outdated CSS
parlor tricks they're all drooling all over themselves. Over in the
REAL web design communities we're all just cockin our heads to the
side and sayin, "Huh?". Especially regarding their 1024x768 non
text-liquid layout, how is THAT supposed to be "cutting edge"? Also I
highly doubt it's as cross browser compatible as people are claiming.
It seems like some screwballs are saying that just because it's W3C
compliant...usually meeting W3C specs means that it's NOT cross
browser compatible since no web browser on the planet ACTUALLY meets
the W3Cs imaginary standards.

I played about with the site for a while, trying to figure out what the hype
was all about. I have about 5 browsers on this machine, including some that
are outdated. Konqueror seems to like most of it, but not all.

When re-scaling the fonts, you can see that the site has a robust layout
indeed. Some people got excited about the so-called 4 column layout, which
I quite frankly believe doesn't take a genius to implement. Overall, it
seems to me like an ordinary good Web site. The innovative part is probably
the underlining on titles. Much of the rest of the tricks I already saw
elsewhere... unless I am missing something.

While I agree that W3-compliant pages are not guaranteed to be rendered
properly by all (IE springs to mind), you at least know that the developer
stuck to standards that were agreed upon rather than hacking or
re-inventing the Web (e.g. IE-only).

Publishers prefer to receive contributions from authors with a keen eyes.
Evidently, the take it too literally. *smile*

I suppose they could have it spill over to a second row or stick to smaller
fonts, but it's no cure. It's like putting out fire using fire.

Oh pray tell, what and where are these "REAL web design communities" ?
Because outside of wally wally land, in the *REAL* world, Zeldman,
Bowman, Shea, Berners_Lee et al are highly acclaimed web architects. Not
only do these people produce quality, usable and accessible websites
that are visual appealing, they also guide the industry on web standards
and practices. As such, Berners-Lee heads the W3C, Zeldman runs a world
renowned emag, has written books and setup the Web Standards Project
(WaSP), and people like Shea run sites that develope and aid the
webdesign industry, such as the CSSZenGarden.

Hatter seriously, people are trying to help you. Whether you believe
what we say or not is upto you. But rest assured, you are NOT years
ahead of everyone else in webdev. What you are doing isnt done by
professionals for the simple fact that it doesnt work and/or isnt
suitable or productive. You've only just jumped on the Flash craze from
the LAST CENTURY, which puts you 4-6 years behind the rest of the world.
You can either join the rest of us in developing future solutions and
integrating standards, or you can stay back in the 90's. The choice is
yours.

And for what its worth, earlier this month even Microsoft started to
work towards a more standardised internet, in an effort to decrease
production times, cut down on compatibilty issues and enable more
productive creation of websites.

Like I said, the choice is yours. If you want help, opinions or advice,
then thats fine, Im sure no one has a problem with it. but when people
say something doesnt work - listen, re-evaluate the issue and modify
your code, otherwise you'll have to rely on spamming usenet with your
link in order to get any hits.

I noticed the res thing too. Im sure they have their reasons. In
defence, the core user base is PC/laptop based web/gfx designers, and as
such tend to run in higher res's. It would be interesting to know how
many people outside of corporate lockdown terminals actually still run
in 800*600.

Exactly! perhaps people will now start to see the actual point - you can
create stylish, visually appealing sites without the need of excessive
technologies and widgets. Furthermore, creating accesible and usable
sites doesnt mean they have to be bland and uncreative. :)
