I'm looking for a good, alternative HTML editor to Frontpage. Currently, I
use Netscape Composer, but I am running into limitations. So, if I could
find something free, all the better however I am open to commercial
suggestions too (as long as the price is reasonable). And it must be
operable on a WinME system.

Thank you,

Jason,

What are you looking for in a web development tool? Are you looking for something like a WYSIWYG
(What You See Is What You Get) type editor, or are you more interested in something text-based?

If you're looking for something simple that allows you to create web pages with a WYSIWYG type
editor, there is CoffeeCup's VisualSite Designer--I've used this tool to create web sites quickly.
Here's a link:

http://www.coffeecup.com/designer/

However, if you're looking for a text-based tool, I would highly recommend TextPad--very
configurable--I use this program regularly myself for all kinds of coding: Java, HTML, DOS, C, etc.
Great program and only 27 dollars for registration.

I prefer using Crimson Editor for coding.

I tried that. I liked it except that it deletes existing files and
saves as a new file thus getting new file attributes. I had to remain
logged into the server to chmod the files after every save. I went back
to my registered copy of UltraEdit. Great editor.

The very best on the market is DreamWeaver - it not only does HTML, but
supports all the common scripting languages too. Highly recommend it -
however it's a bit complex because of the volume of stuff it supports.

I am using on Windows ME the HTML-kit.
Easy to use.
Free downloading at: www.chami.com
There are also newsgroups at: news.chamisplace.com
Lots of plugins.

nvu is based on mozilla composer.
Last version (0.4) is stable, but don't expect do get a final product.
Anyway, it's a WYSISWYG editor. You can run it on both major OS (Windows
and Linux).

It's because of the type match: both alcohol and meatRAM are volatile.

I'm using Netscape Composer 7.1, and there are plenty of things that are
driving me crazy -- like, the program decides automatically whether a
URL is relative or not, and if you don't watch it every minute, it can
disrupt your entire directory tree.

However, it does have a built in text editing capability, so if you want
to insert scripts or styles, or clean up them damned links, you can do
it there.

I have it because I like Netscape's email/newsgroups program (Outlook
sux.). I hate the browser, though. Half the time I click on a link in
my mail, I end up having to copy the link and use IE instead, especially
if the page involves Javascript.

However, the price is right -- download the whole ball of wax for
nothing at Netscape.com.

Of course, it sounds ike you been there and done that. Good Luck!)

Sorry, I should have been clear. I was talking about Crimson Editor.
I'm not familiar with grey matter except between the ears. Sometimes
I'm not sure of the grey matter between my ears either. Are you
familiar with CRS?

Look in the preferences under Composer. There's a setting there to fix
that. I don't remember the wording off hand though.

Also configurable. Sounds like you might have javascript off.
Personally, that's the way I like it. And I don't bother looking at
those pages that I'd have to switch settings or browsers.

Good price.

I have. I also have Mozilla which I like a bit better.

possibly have?

It doesn't know HTML, just like the OP. ;)

That'll probably be a good one. It can help the OP learn the HTML which
he doesn't seem to know.

I was going to recommend notepad but that doesn't know HTML either.

To the OP, just having some fun here, don't be offended. We all started
learning somewhere.
