Assistance Required

Hi everyone,

I am building a website for a small business that I have begun and I would
like some help.
I am having a few problems with it and don't quite know where to go with it.
I built this in
Dreamweaver MX.

First thing I am having is difficultly with the tables. I have been unable
to change the largest
tables height even know I have tried. Also note that when you change pages
from the left
bar, the page widths play up and it changes slightly on each page. Then I
would like to widen
the white area (on everypage but the homepage) so that it is in line with
the graphics on the top.

The other problems I am having with this are as followed:

* It is set for 800 by 600 and people have been telling me that I should use
the whole page

* I have tested it on other platforms and it doesn't seem compatible with
all browsers. Is there
a way I can sort this out?

* I don't know what DOC TYPE to use

* And I would like to add a CGI script on the home page to collect email
addresses for the newsletter.
It would like to do this manually, so that I recieve a email advising me
that someone has joined. But
I want to do it without having to use my webservers CGI mail (because it is
limited) and without
having to use anyone elses software. Can I do so?

* Is there a way that I can add a order form of some type that wont require
someone to have to put
in multiple forms for multiple products? This will be temporary.

* I cannot think of anything else right now, but all comments are welcome.

Which browsers/platforms? Not compatible in what way? Looks much the
same here in Moz1.6, O7 and IE6 (all on Win2k).

What version of HTML are you writing? It looks like Transitional to
me[1], but Strict is better for a new site. You will need to look into
CSS if you are going to use Strict (you should look into CSS anyway).

The correct doctype for HTML4.01 Strict is:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

* And I would like to add a CGI script on the home page to collect email

Not sure I really understand what you are getting at here. Could you be
more specific?

[1] Actually it looks more like HTML3.2, but I'm never going to suggest
that you use that.

Not sure I really understand what you are getting at here. Could you be
more specific?

I am pretty sure that you are right about HTML 4.

What i meann by an order form is this:

I want people to be able to submit a form to be able to buy the products I
am offering.
However I do not want them to have to submiit 5 forms for 5 products. Maybe
i could
use a radio box or something. Not sure..

A radio button would only allow them to select one product. I don't
think that's what you are aiming for.

Depending on the number of products you have available, listing them all
with checkboxes may be an option.

Did you use "layout" view to develop this? If so, be aware that it develops
over-complicated and somewhat fragile code. One thing it appears to try to do
is over-control the heights of table cells. The consensus among experienced
Dreamweaver users appears to be to stick to design view and code view. They
may need a bit more knowledge of HTML initially, because you are more directly
building your layout from HTML elements (& CSS rules). But as you are now
finding, sorting out the problems resulting from layout view needs that
knowledge anyway!

Table height cannot be specified with HTML (with some "illegal"
proprietary exceptions).
As someone else mentioned, it is much preferable to design to elastic
width ("liquid design") rather than fixed width. You have 4 nested
tables. Is that necessary, inasmuch as the first two have the same
width and the first one seems to have only one column? And each of your
tables and many of your cells have a fixed width...

I am not sharing the opinion of many who say "don't use tables for
design". I think tables are easy and simple to use and rendered quite
well by many browsers. Don't overuse tables.

Your whole page is overspecified with sizes, and the colour
instructions should preferably be kept in CSS.

And when you see something like:
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
  
 
 
 
and just at the bottom of the page (!) then you realise that there is
some grave basic misunderstanding about page layout...
