Do users need this?

Windows Update shows .Net Framework 2.? as a software update. I was
wondering if its needed by a non programmer like myself. Is there any
benefit to the "casual computer user"?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, there is. Every program that is written for .Net Framework 2 will need
to have the framework installed on the machine. Although many programs will
install the Framework if it is not present, others will expect it to be on
the target machine and simply not function if it isn't.

Only if you use applications that require it.

The framework has no benefit on it's own.

Like Ray said it is only for app that use .NET 2.0, but I'd bet that if you
keep using your computer long you'll run across one and need it.

It isn't required for security or anything though.

Any application that needs it is going to prompt you to install it, install
it then, you can differ it till then..
