EditItemTemplate takes more than one click to activate

I've got a datalist with an ItemTemplate and EditItemTemplate.

Its strange (to me), but when I have some records showing (data list
items, if you will), and I click the Edit button on the first record,
the EditItemTemplate shows up fine. But, If I click any other record
than the one at the top of the list, the EditItemTemplate does not
activate on the first click. I have to click the Edit button again for
the EditItemTemplate to activate. I'm clueless to what's going on here.

I can provide all the code, if needed.
