Trolling? I am I the only one (Mr Tasso excepted) that thought this was
funny?

You must be reading a different thread. The only person who didn't
respond in a way that implied humour was Norman.
Even funnier given some of the reactions.

Which reactions were they?
I guess it's true that Americans don't really have a sense of humour.

I thought they did, but could only understand slapstick?

You make me sad.
And unfortunately the 867 5309 number just dates me--doesn't anyone see
the reference?? Do a google.

Sorry most of us did not give the original post that much attention.
It started sounding like a fool wrote it, and we treated it as such.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

I didn't actually regard you, kim et al in that context, but most of the
others....
Which reactions were they?

Phillip, Jonathon, Auggie, Travis...
I thought they did, but could only understand slapstick?

Actually *I* was trolling there. Actually I was conducting a scientific
experiment to compare how many Americans would be offended by the accusation
that they had no sense of humour vs the number of others who were offended
by the accusation that they were American.

I'm sorry... Every day this week seems like Friday.

And the answer to your conundrum, Dylan, entirely depends on whether the
Hobnobs are chocolate-coated...

Who said I did? Either way you can't make sweeping statements on behalf
of "the majority" without knowing who the majority are.

Ah, but which type of chocolate? I used to favour the milk chocolate
ones, but then started to prefer the dark variety. Now though, I tend to
avoid them as I'd prefer to keep my belly off my shoes if at all
possible! :D

Don't people think it's "cool" to be the minority these days?
Non-conformity and all that...

Oh, well I love a good joke, but just not that funny when it is not very
clever. Akin to the numerous posts "CSS sucks the only real way to
layout a page is with tables!" Oh well there are those who never tire of
the ol' "kick in the groin" on the funniest video shows...

"The 1980s produced a number of one-hit wonders, including the
infamous Tommy Tutone and its 1982 hit song "Jenny (867-5309)." This
San Francisco band led by Tommy Heath and Jim Keller doesn't appear to
have made much of a mark on the music world, and it likely wouldn't
now be remembered were it not for the furor raised by its use of a
phone number in its one memorable song."

Apparently. I don't remember it, perhaps it wasn't very big in the UK
?

No, I found it amusing also. I assumed it was pure humour, quite good
humour as well.
Even funnier given some of the reactions. I guess it's true that Americans
don't really have a sense of humour.

That's for sure!

Hey - this American got the humor. I think there are just a lot of
people who need humor/humour (depending on your side of the pond)
transplants.

More like the splendour of diversity - viva la difference (thank heaven
for little girls) - one man's meat is another's poison - dare to be
different - embrace the fear of the unknown.

Norman, you mean he's back?

He dropped into the-newsgroup-that-shall-not-be-named-in-AWW a couple
of years ago. He had been spending a lot of time in the weight-loss
newsgroups and had lost enough weight that such a loss for me (I'm
*under*weight) would have put me six feet under. Someone else was
trolling the newsgroup calling anyone who couldn't deal with SPAM [sic]
a bunch of sissies and Ritzman popped up with "You're new at this, aren't
you?" or something like that. It cracked me right up!

The latest I could find of his in Usenet is from January this year
in another newsgroup, alt.fan.cecil-adams (I hope I got the spelling
right).

His website at http://www.supertroll.com/ currently just shows a Flash
image of an overweight rabbit (which resizes itself to fit your browser
window). It used to have a cartoon of a caped green troll with an 'S' on
his chest.

For others who are wondering what or who we are writing about (or think
there was no humour in my earlier post in this thread), see one of the
FAQs for the-newsgroup-that-shall-not-be-named-in-AWW:

What does "Cut it out, Ron!" mean?
http://www.spamfaq.net/terminology.shtml#ritzman

I really miss his parody Usenet posts.
