Beginner's questions are better handled in comp.lang.java.help

BTW: This is not a list, this is a Usenet group. The difference? It is
not owned by Google, it is not web based (it predates the web). It is
not real time, instead store-and-forward is used among thousands of
servers. Ic comes with an long list of written-down and unwritten culture.

Unfortunately Google Groups Beta let it appear if Google owns this
thing. It doesn't. And their Web-interface to Usenet leaves much to be
desired. Check this introduction

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

and then get a real newsreader.

Way off topic....

Is there any other passable way to access usenet when you
dont have access to an nntp server, besides google?

Google groups are usable from anywhere with web access and
the searching is pretty nice.

Define 'passable'. There are certainly other web based interfaces
to the usenet newsgroups.

What's wrong with your provider's NNTP server news.rcn.com?

There are several free newsservers, see
<http://www.newsservers.net/FreeNewsServers.htm>

Some of them are read-only (you can't post), some don't offer binaries,
and maybe some of their newsfeeds may be limited (e.g. not "all"
newsgroups or incomplete articles).

Is there a decent newsreader written in java that is open source?

My provider rocks, but I can't get there from my current or other
consulting gigs.

Free servers are usually down and its not worth my time to keep
searching out another pirate server.

You could connect to an nntp-proxy on a "home" machine that can reach
your provider's nntp server. netcat is a simple solution.
