Question regarding links to video on Intranet

W

Will

I'm looking to launch AVI's hosted on my server from another computer
via links of pictures on a webpage.(this is all in-house on a 100mb
LAN) I am looking for a way to launch the AVI from the link without
downloading the AVI to the local computer (in essence streaming, but
more like maping the drive on the server and playing the AVI directly
from server, which works fine of course)

Reason why I am looking at a web page to do this for those who think
im crazy. I have many movies on server HD and want to have a way of
launching movies from a jpg thumbnail image of movie. Unfortunately,
with WinXP I have found no way to launch the actual movie from server
from a windows JPG image/thumbnail in Explorer so using an HTML page
with the thumbnail is my idea so far.

Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated..

TIA,

Will

You're joking right?
A home network thing is already slow, and you want to show avi's and videos?
Find a cheap host with at least a T1 service.

A 100mb[sic] lan is *not* slow.

Why? So the site will run even slower over how many routers it takes to get
from there to here?

In any case how does the data get from the host to that T1 service? Probably
out of a 100Mb nic.

And how would it get from the T1 service into a users computer? Probably
through a 56Kb modem, at the very best through a 10Mb cable modem.

Once again RtS you are talking out of your arse.

Read the post again, Stupid, particularly the first two sentences.

There is no recognized redirector format for AVIs, but since you are on
a intranet I'm assuming you may have to deal with one type of media
player only. This may enable you to use a redirector format intended for
different file types, if the media player is liberal in accepting
formats (like MS MediaPlayer) then it will probably work.

Several redirector formats here:

Maybe I am not clear enough. And am not sure if this will work or
not. (i have minor knowledge in html as you may have surmised)

Currently what I have done is create one webpage with multiple jpg
images of movie titles and linked the individual images to the
corrosponding AVI on my in house server over a 100mb LAN. Once click
on, it asks if I want to save or run (which was expected) and of
course if you hit run, it will D/L the file to the local computer and
then play it. This is what im trying to eliminate. Is there a way to
bypass the dload and create a link or add some code to either launch
the file directly from the server? Or maybe create a link that will
launch the software with the AVI cued up?

I would like to have a thumbnail page of all my movies to be able to
choose from when watching on my home theatre PC.

Hi Will,

Did you get this to work? I'm currently in the process of doing
*exactly* the same. So i figured if the wheel has already been invented ...

The posting convention in this group is to trim quotes down to a
minimum, then put your reply beneath it, corrected this once.

Did you bother to check the replies he got? (hint: you might want to try
that)
