Referencing a control that resides on a customer web user control

How do I reference a control the resides on a web-user
control.

i.e I have a page referenced as index.aspx. On that page
I have a control known as leftNav.ascx. I would like to
reference a panel located on leftNav.ascx from
index.aspx. Any ideas on how I would do that. I am new
to ASP.net???
