nursing training and worked for 3 years in an institution with many people
with severe personality disorders including paranoid schizophrenia and manic
depression.

You see, on the one hand, you keep saying that you don't care what people
think, but on the other hand you appear to have a need to defend your
opinions 'to the death'.

It could be a repressed memory which is causing a schizophrenic tendency.
Or maybe the onset of a spot of depression.
