VHDL to Control HD44780 (want to read busy flag)

Hi all, I'm having some trouble figuring out how to read the busy flag from this chip. I'm pretty sure it requires my data bus to be an inout port. I'm having trouble controlling the Data Bus inout port with no external enable.

What's the appropriate way to poll the busy flag using VHDL?

Any tips or tricks?

For anyone not familiar with this chip, after a write instruction the HD44780 holds data_bus(7) 'high' (busy) until it's finished executing and then pulls it 'low'.
