I doubt it: The IP addresses are too distant

I don't think so. The cjsonnack address at 3M and web site is too
elaborate a ruse for "Jonnie Russell" to have come up with it.
Sad. Even Derek Smart probably never stooped so far.

Who's Derek Smart?

When/how did you learn about the posting? Do you monitor this groups?

I'm more curious how any real marketing company could allow a
representative to use "irishgeek" in the first place. They
must represent the single most clueless collection of marketeers
on the planet, and that is an impressive feat in and of itself.

Thanks for posting. Do you mind if I ask a few questions and make a few
suggestions?

But you did hire that marketing company? Care to tell us the name of
that company? How long did they work for you?

To avoid obvious legal issues I can't mention their name but they are
a London based, Online marketing company which we hired at the
beginning of the year.

Will you sue them for your damages?

That decision hasnt been made yet.
When/how did you learn about the posting? Do you monitor this groups?

I noticed a spike in the apache logs and checked the referer which
lead me to the thread. No I don't monitor the groups.

Thank you for the suggestions about our web site, I will look into
updating the information.

Sincerely

I'm pretty new around here. What seems pretty sad to me is that the
oldhands clearly expected it to be a piece of marketing hype which
simply means that it must happen a great deal.
I've programmed in many languages for many years and have recently
started with Java, but there are other language groups that still have
the flavour of cooperation that was so enjoyable all those years ago
(harrumph! harrrumph!!!).
Trying to learn how the Java classes work would be easier if the groups
were full of existing questions and answers! Then the great day comes
when *I* can answer someone's question and my, sadly greying, chest
swells with pride. Beats me why these places don't just form on their own.

Steve

It seems to me these places *do* form on their own. Witness the entire
comp.lang.* newsgroup hierarchy, complete with associated FAQs maintained by
dedicated individuals for no money and often with every newbie pointing out
how "wrong" it is.

The problem is the very nature of the "community". It attracts like-minded
people, and wherever like-minded people gather, marketers are sure to follow.
This is because the community of like-minded people is a self-constructed
targetable demographic. No need for surveys or mining census data, everyone in
comp.lang.java.* is interested in Java in some way, shape or form, so it's the
perfect place to attempt to sell Java-related products.

The problem is made worse by the anonymous nature of usenet (anonymous in the
sense that a person living in North America would have little opportunity to
verify the story of a successful project deployment in Ireland) and the
ability to communicate massive amounts of information for little or no cost.

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with this behaviour, or advocate it, but I
think it's important to understand that this sort of thing is to be "expected"
in any mass communication medium where like-minded people gather. The fact
that people still help each other and read these newsgroups in spite of the
marketing invasion speaks to the strength of the community, not it's weakness.

You also avoided to answer my question if this company did other
(similar?) marketing activities for you.

sadly, this type of "marketing" seems to be getting the results
intended -> make more people aware of the product
(unless it was intended to *sell* more of the product, in which
case it is impossible for me to say if it worked)

goose,
you spamless bastards ;-)
