Hi friends,

This is really irritating to see these spams in a C language group.
How to stop these bluddy spammers...
I'm sorry for posting this, but how to stop these bluddy spammers...

If that is part of the filters you apply to comp.lang.c then
you would not have seen Jack Thomson's message, since he is @gmail.com

That post was as evil User923005, who does not use any filters (due to using
the google interface).
It is only as Dann Corbit that the filters are applied, because I am using a
news server rather than the google interface.

What? Why? "Only in Amercia" could the publication of what I don't want
to read be considered a legal matter!

Would one (or more) of you consider posting your filter files? Or
providing a link to someone who's uploaded them? Doesn't matter whether
they are meant for slrn or pan or any other newsreader -- am just
interested in the REs to filter them out. It took me quite sometime to
get rid of the "MI5 Prosecution" posts.

These are my generic news rules:

(if you use thunderbird, they are in the file
..thunderbird/<you>/<yourKe>.slt/News/<yourServer>/msgFilterRules.dat)

action="Ignore thread"
condition="OR (from,contains,bigbertha) OR (subject,contains,TV on) OR
(subject,contains,TV Channels) OR (subject,contains,Guitar) OR
(subject,contains,islam) OR (from,contains,Skybuck) OR
(subject,contains,MI5 Persecution) OR (from,contains,NewsMaestro) OR
(subject,contains,sexdates) OR (subject,contains,nude) OR
(subject,contains,-ac-) OR (subject,contains,guitar) OR
(from,contains,zaxfuuq) OR (subject,contains,dating) OR
(from,contains,zappron) OR (from,contains,balu) OR
(subject,contains,Nike) OR (subject,contains,****) OR
(subject,contains,####) OR (subject,contains,shoes) OR
(subject,contains,\) OR (subject,contains,paypal) OR
(subject,contains,Breitling) OR (subject,contains,Replica) OR
(subject,contains,naked) OR (subject,contains,lolita) OR
(subject,contains,lesbian)"

Brutal, but effective!

I said could, not would. Since IANAL I really have no opinion.

So you could just as easily have made, and would have been just as
committed to, this statement instead: "failure to publish personal plonks
could have legal difficulties"? What did you do, toss a coin?

Don't be silly.

OK, all silliness aside, I'm still unclear as to how me posting what I'd
prefer to not read, *could* have any legal consequences.

Well, for example, since I am posting from my work account, if
I were to post that I automatically filter out some particular
person's postings, then that could induce a perception of
probable bias against that person should that person interact with
my organization. As my organization is part of a government,
the existance of probable bias against a particular person could be
grounds for legal action, or at least sufficient evidence for
"discovery" to be authorized to find out whether I had any role
in the interaction that person had with some government
section.

Suppose for example that I had indicated that I filter out postings
from a particular person, and then at some point that person had
applied for a government scientific or engineering research grant
and was turned down. There was a time when the overall organization
I work for was responsible for administering those grants (that
was before our particular branch was created); if the person
thought we were still responsible for administering those grants
then they might sue claiming I had interfered with the grant process.
And even now that our organization does not administer those grants,
it is not uncommon for employees of our branch to be asked to
sit on grant review panels as "outside examiners"; the identities
of the reviewers are not (AFAIK) revealed, so a person who suspected
bias on my part would have to sue to find out who was on the
review panel. And if it turned out that someone I work with was
on the panel, then the person would have grounds for further
action aimed at discovering evidence or manufacturering suspicion
that I had influenced my coworker reviewer, either at the time
of the review or at some earlier time ("look how <adjective> this
poster is!").

Either I am missing any configuration options or I need a better
newsreader. I am using Pan. Do you know any capable of filtering
messages on its own by passing messages through a spam filter? [Sorry
for keeping up with this OT but important thread, this is killing the
usenet]

I personally consider this to be meta-topical. Which OS do you need a
newsreader for? I'm not familiar with Pan.

Yes, obviously the intracacies of configuring various newsreaders are
"meta-topical" (WTF? just make it up as you go along, why don't you) -
after all, by definition if the regulars are interested in something
then it's topical, but if they aren't then it isn't. Hypocrisy,
hypocrisy, nauseating hypocrisy.

It won't help, because filters are different on each news reader.
The following is an extract from my c.l.c. filters. It is a short
portion, and contains only thread plonks (I keep thread plonks at
the beginning, personal plonks at the end, for my own
convenience). Filters start at each 'name=' heading. The whole
c.l.c filter contains 428 lines today, for 71 plonks.

Also, publishing personal plonks could have legal difficulties.

ROFLMAO. Just who the hell do you think you are? The truth is, you're a
sad old man - repeat after me, *no* *one* *gives* *a* *flying* *frick*
who's in your killfile.

Wonderful contribution there - and not OT in the least, I'm sure!

And fix your goddam sig, asswipe.
