Webparts and Firefox

Marc

Dear all

is it correct that webparts in asp.net 3.5 (which is as far as I know
asp.net 2.0) do not work properly in firefox and the asp.net futures will
work but are a beta version?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Marc

Hi Marc,

Your understanding is correct. If you mean the Microsoft ASP.NET Futures
July 2007 it's the preview instead of Beta. And it's the latest officially
released one.

Hi Allen

Thank you for this valuable information. Do you know by when Microsoft plans
to fix this issues (displaying verbs/drag and drop support)?
This would be a great help. Firefox has a major market share that I cannot
ignore in my webprojects. So when I use webparts I have to make sure they
work properly.

Again, thanks a lot for your support.
Kind regards,
Marc

Hi Marc,

This feature probably will not be supported in the v-next. But please be
assured that we're considering revisiting this. I understand that many
customers are looking for this feature. Our development team will take into
consideration all feedback from the customers.

Please also note that the 07 bits will be removed shortly and subsequent
pieces from the 07 bits will be moved to our codeplex site:
http://www.codepledx.com/aspnet

If you have further questions please feel free to ask.

Hi Allen

Thanks for your answer. I have a couple of questions:
- "This feature probably will not be supported" - this means only verbs or
drag and drop, too?
- How stable are the Microsoft ASP.NET Futures July 2007 previw? Can I use
them in a production release?
- I delved into asp.net this year and probabely because of this I do not
know what you mean by "the 07 bits". Can you give me a hint?

Thanks in advance,

Marc

Hi Marc,

Quote from Marc==================================================
- "This feature probably will not be supported" - this means only verbs or
drag and drop, too?
==================================================

This means the support for WebPart drag and drop in FireFox. We're now
considering revisiting this feature. So I cannot give you an assurance at
this moment as to whether it will be supported in the v-next.

Quote from Marc==================================================

them in a production release?
==================================================

I would not recommend you use it in your production release. For now you
can try to use it for evaluation purpose. Please keep in mind that it's
only a preview.

Quote from Marc==================================================

==================================================

"the 07 bits" means the release in the following site:
http://www.asp.net/Downloads/futures/

It will soon be moved to codeplex for the potential revisit for the next
release.
If you have further questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi Allen

Thanks for your clarifications! Its fine for me. I just want to emphasize
how important a webpart support of firefox is. Webparts is a great feature
for building customized portals. But if I want to use it in a Internet
scenario, where 20 to 40% of the users can use Firefox, depending of the
global region, it is a necessity to have Firefox support.

With the situation right now, I can only use webparts in a intranet
scenario, where I know which browser will be used.

I can understand that Microsoft wants to support its own browser, but like
this only the importance of ASP.NET will be hurt and not a lot is gained.

Hope this is not too philosophical. :)

Thanks again for your support.

Kind regards,

Marc
