my very first flash on a site

Disco Octopus

Hi,

Someone said to me 'I'd like try this...', and I said 'Go for it'. So
anyway, they animated my cows head using flash. I liked it, so I put it
onto one of my sites.
I'd like to know if it has been placed as accessible as possible.
If it fails (IE flash is not installed) on someones browser, I would like
the original image to load instead. Have I done it correctly?
If the browser is a text browser, like lynx, I would still like to see that
it is a link, with the appropriate alt text displayed. Have I covered that
ok too?

Thanks very much.

IE6 with Flash - plays the movie
Opera 7.5 with plugins disabled - shows the image
Netscape 4.8 with Flash - crashes!

Your HTML doesn't validate, mostly simple stuff, but there's really no
need for the embed element. Only NN4 (and other antiques) needs it in
preference to a carefully authored object element and as NN4 is
crashing...

Funny :)

But with Firebird with Javascript disabled, I see nothing.
Just a white square where the cow used to be.
No alt text, no link.

That is, on most pages.
On http://www.choicebeefjerky.com.au/sitemap.htm I get a
blue square with scrollbars, with this text in it:
Not Found
The requested URL
/choicebeefjerky.com.au/common/images/dynamic/383/cow.swf
was not found on this server.

Apache/1.3.27 Server at site-ezy.com Port 80

That's also what I get in another browser with Javascript
enabled btw. All pages show the animated cow, except the
sitemap page.

Works and looks great.

Mozilla 1.6, no flash installed: No image, no text, just an empty
white box.

Thanks Nick.

Any ideas on how I can fix that?

Thanks

Yes, don't use Flash, or accept the fact that not everyone will see
it.

I dont mind that everyone wont see it. I have accepted that. But I would
ike to show the image when people do not see the flash. Any ideas?

Put the image between the <object> tag and the </object> It should
appear if they don't have flash.

I would expect that the case too. But I have already done that. Apparently
its not working as expected.
Any more ideas?

I dunno. I can see the image fine in Opera (without flash).

This time I watched the page load load in Mozilla, and I saw the image
flash on the screen, then replaced with an empty white box. If no one
else complains, maybe I just have a problem with the build I have
installed.

You know, come to think of it, I think I actually have flash 4 enabled
for moz. Perhaps it tries to load it but can't because the version is
incompatible.

I have similar problems. each version of mozilla does different things.

I really wish I could get this cracked.

anyone else have any ideas?

The other option is to use Macromedia to detect Flash. search
www.flash.com for "detect flash version"

OK. I have two variations.
Can you please let me know what the pages look like in the various browsers
that you have access to.

http://choicebeefjerky.com.au/beefjerky.html
and
http://choicebeefjerky.com.au/order_online.html

They are only slightly different, but they may (or may not) behave
differently.

I do not have IE6, so if someone can please report on that browser, I would
appreciate it.
Also, any other browsers too please.

Thanks

NS 7.1 : the first one displays only an image, the second
one is animated.
IE 6.0 every possible script disabled:
first one: I only see the left side of the picture.
second one: still image.
IE 6.0 manually allowing scripts and active-x:
first one: animated
second one: animated
Firebird (javascript disabled):
first one: still image
second one: white square
Firefox (javascript enabled):
first one: still image
second one: white square
