Luigi, you do not need to use Outlook Express just because you have Windows
98. I use a Mac and you really really wouldn't like it <g> but also have an
old W98 laptop. It uses Firefox as a browser, Pegasus for email, and if I
used it for posting to newsgroups I would use Forte Free Agent (as I used to
do in Windows days).

Before you ask, they are all free.

Good point.
Some questions concerning your remarks, though.
1) New Symantec products do not support Win 98.
How would I stop Internet hots?
(viruses, troian horses with more)
And how much would that cost?
2) I use several browsers, one of these being Firefox and I have done it
for a while.
Would that prevent hots from attacking the OS without using firewalls and
antivirus?
3) Don´ t you see any advantage in learning to use Linux at least at a very
basic level?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

I promised myself I'd never do this, but

1. You may find you do not have enough RAM /HDD space to run the more
modern Linuxes. eg. Ubuntu with the lot need 256MB RAM and 2Gig HD
space. There are many many smaller Linuxes, but the smaller you go, the
more you need to know.

Who said that I would necessarily use the most modern Linuxes?

Prove it!

Easy peasy:

You like freedom.

You like people to have nice days when you are a little huffy.

You are very security conscious.

You like a lot of stuff on your webpages.

Need I go on?

It is safer than Windows for everything (except your sleep
patterns, perhaps).
I have posted to alt.os.linux

Don't post anything. Read the archives of that and other Linux
groups. The question is asked many times every week; if you cannot
find an answer to your question, then you can post.

Also, try <www.distrowatch.com>.

Damn! I'm going to hate myself later.
You say you don't know much about Linux.
Older Linuxes are not as easy to use as newer versions.

See point (3) in my previous post.

I don't know the word hots. Do you mean bots? There are free firewalls, for
instance Zone Alarm. If you don't use IE and OE you are far less susceptible
to viruses and worms anyway. There is free anti-virus software called AVG
which AFAIK is still compatible with W98 - it's easy to check. They do a
paid-for edition as well, so if you need free make sure you get the right
one. Caveat: Free is not necessarily Best.
2) I use several browsers, one of these being Firefox and I have done it

Firefox (in fact *any* browser other than IE) is inherently safer than IE. I
had several browsers on my old W98 desktop PC and never had any virus/worm or
anything else, but I ran a good firewall. As far as email is concerned, OE is
not a good thing to use if you are worried about security. I would recommend
Pegasus, but there are plenty of others.
3) Don´ t you see any advantage in learning to use Linux at least at a very

I haven't the slightest idea whether there is any advantage for you in
learning Linux. Only you can decide that.

By the way, your sig separator is broken. It should be dash, dash, space,
then new line (like mine). Yours is missing the space, which means that my
newsreader does not automatically strip it and I have done it manually. No
big deal, but you might like to know.

I think whoever created the sig separator might well have put that
space at the end just to trip people up :)

It is very good when people get it right though because it saves a lot
of hassle editing out their sig's.

Macs suck!

The people that use them are even worse. Every single one is an ex art
college student with a wildly exaggerated sense their own worth.

There's no way an intelligent fellow like Luigi would wish to be in the
company of such a smug narcissistic bunch.

Hey, that's a slur. I never went to art college! No comment on the rest in
case I incriminate myself.

Can't imagine what the Mac groups would make of Luigi<g>.

No... no... Luigi... there is a small place that Apple always
reserved in their plans for Italians-in-Sweden. It was
theoretical, forward planning, scenario drafting backroom stuff,
they put a bit of work into it. They thought at the time it would
only be an outside possibility to actually snare any members for
this exclusive corner of an already exclusive club - but they
wanted to be thorough and cover all the bases.

It would delight some people to have this part of the strategic
Apple Mac plans filled with an actual member. Imagine the
reverential treatment you would get, it would be like going to
British Airways and asking for the first class lounge. You would
enter the lounge and the attendant would take you to a further
even more exclusive section of first class. In there would be
Heather and lots of personal security guards specialising in
1-man businesses.

They are more or less things which I have written on Usenet.
What I mean was: have we ever met in the real life?
Ps.: in a few days I may have installed Linux or I may have stopped writing
here for a while.

No, it is not.
But it can be.
I prefer to spend money to buy a SFTP program.

They might be safer but that might not be enough.

But I only have 4 GB

Install almost any flavor of linux.... Debian will work fine, but pick
something like XFCE4 rather than Gnome/KDE for your desktop.

Ubuntu and FCX tend to be kitchen-and-bathtub kind of distros; you
really want something simpler like debian.

I have linux running successfully on several boxes with 4 MB of (flash)
disk and 8 MB of ram; and a graphical UI on a box with 64 MB of flash
and 32 MB ram. It runs OK.

And a handheld with a 4GB hd, 400 Mhz arm CPU, and 64 MB RAM running
full-blown desktop apps, although you have to be careful with that
little ram what you have open at any one time.

So don't let the naysayers guide you.

Next all you need to do is get a newsreader which respects the sig
identifier in other people's messages :)

Isn't that a toggle even with the infamous OE?
