I am starting a web site and I was wondering about the best way to piss
visitors off. As a bonus, getting them fired from their jobs if they
visit my site at work would be really neat. Any suggestions?

if the file is in the proper format (.rm .asf .mp3 etc...) all you have to
do is supply a link to it.

Well, then you can start with the survey page
What we really hate on the web
http://www.lowendmac.com/musings/02/0528.html

41.9% of survey respondents will avoid sites that automatically play
music; 71.1% strongly dislike sites that automatically play music.

Automatic music playing will give users problems in all kinds of places
and situations:
- in public libraries
- when they are using music themselves
- when they have no controls on the music console (happens often and
it's because of the web designer)

- to counter the intrusion, a user may quickly close the application
down, closing all windows/tabs at once, which may be a loss

That would be a reason to link to some music, but not a reason to make
it automatically play.

These guys are nuts, huh? They think they are gods.

;)

Firstly, they would not tell you how, and secondly they are telling you
what you HAVE TO like and better be like them, (God's forbid).

While the whole idea is not the best, if want to play with it, here we are:

<!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan -->
<EMBED src=http://msn.com/satorious/love.mp3 width=145 height=60
type=audio/mpeg loop="true" autostart="true">
<!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" endspan i-checksum="52224" -->

You van change loop into "false" if you don't want play it in loop
and if you will have enough autostarts, set it to 'false' as well.

That thing plays Windows Media player right on page.

There are better groups than that one, I mean with some decent people,
willing to help.

Check it out!

Speak for yourself.
Firstly, they would not tell you how,

*Sigh*. This is Usenet; not a helpdesk, not a forum, _Usenet_. We give
of our time here voluntarily, without pay, usually without thanks. The
group exists for discussion, not questions and answers. The OP posts a
question, comment, problem, whatever. We discuss it. If we think it's a
bad idea, we'll discuss why. If the OP does have a question, and it
happens to get answered during the discussion, then good for them. But
that's not why the group is here. If you want instructions on how to do
things you shouldn't even be doing in the first place, pay someone. But
if you want honest opinions and discussion, that's what we're here for.
and secondly they are telling you
what you HAVE TO like and better be like them, (God's forbid).

Hardly. Even the regulars here disagree on lots of things. If we all
agreed on everything, it'd make for pretty short and boring discussions,
and we probably wouldn't bother. Of course, we all have opinions, and we
have no qualms in discussing those opinions, and backing them up if
necessary.

There are lots of reasons not to do what the OP is wanting. Can you give
an example, just one, of where it would actually be a good idea?

On the OP's own computer.

Touché. :)

However, my point still stands. According to the FAQ, all questions are
assumed to be in a www context, unless otherwise stated. The OP didn't
state that, and the question made it fairly obvious that this is a www
site, not a page for personal use. You're right, but that particular
reason doesn't apply in this situation.

How Do I Incorporate Sound Into My Website?
The right answer to this question is: You don't.
To put it bluntly, your business is with the visitor's browser, not with
their speakers. Playing music on your site is a great way to alienate people
and keep them from coming back.

Consider these scenerios:
1.. Visitor "A" is goofing off at work. Congratulations, you just got him
in trouble with his boss when he landed on your site and had a song
automatically play as soon as the page loaded.
2.. Visitor "B" is listening to his own CD. Congratulations, you just made
him angry because he now has two songs playing simultaneously, neither of
which sound good anymore because they're both running together.
3.. Visitor "C" simply doesn't share your taste in music. He decides to
click away because he doesn't want to be subjected to a song he doesn't
like.
In any of the above cases, NOBODY is going to take the time to reach over
and turn down their speakers or fumble with his task bar just to avoid your
music. They're just going to click away and go to a site whose webmaster
understands not to intrude upon them like that.

I'll bet ANYONE my month's paycheck that we can take a sample of any 100
sites with autoloading music vs. 100 sites without and the "sessions" and
"repeat visits" of the no-music sites will be a higher ratio compared to
overall hits. If you're a band or otherwise in the business of music and
you'd like to share samples of your work, by all means, do so. However,
music should be provided ONLY by giving the visitor a choice to listen to
the song before the actual music begins. Please note: Giving them a choice
to turn the music OFF is not the correct option.

By following the above advice - incorporating sound is simple. Provide a
link as you would any other file. Like so:
<a href="path/file.mp3">Listen to our song</a> is all you need!

here. What the **** do we owe you? Nothing.
Firstly, they would not tell you how, and secondly they are telling you

Untrue.

We are telling the poster that this is A Bad Thing, and Why. If you have
such a Small Brain that you cannot figure it out, you should stick to
tiddly-winks.
While the whole idea is not the best,
Duh!

if want to play with it, here we are:

Gee, I don't recommend you shoot yourself in the mouth, but here are some
models and makes of shotguns which have short enough barrels to make the
job easier.
<!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan -->
<EMBED src=http://msn.com/satorious/love.mp3 width=145 height=60
type=audio/mpeg loop="true" autostart="true">
<!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" endspan i-checksum="52224" -->

That thing plays Windows Media player right on page.

Yep. And gets Joe fired, and Mary annoyed, and Phil has the sound off and
can't imagine why the page takes so damn long and his computer's bogged
down.

Bad, bad, bad, Henry.

DU enlightened us with:
41.9% of survey respondents will avoid sites that automatically play

So you mean that about 71.1 - 41.9 = 29.2% of the people keep visiting
a website that they strongly dislike? Weird.
